what will the museum of the future be like?

The Future of Museums (according to Radio National)

"As society and technology advance, what does that mean for the future of museums? Is the real being replaced by the virtual? And will younger people continue to go to museums?"

That's next Thursday's discussion on Future Tense, Radio National - see their web page, http://www.abc.net.au/rn/futuretense/, and the 'In production' column on the right.

I just finished recording the radio interview for next week's Future Tense on Radio National. Antony Furnell interviewed Frank Howarth, Director of the Australian Museum; Louise Douglas, General Manager, Audience and Development, National Museum of Australia and me!
The interview revolved around the idea of maintaining relevance in contemporary society and the impact of social media on authority in the museum. An interesting discussion, which lasted for about 40 minutes! The interview will be edited and broadcast Thursday 3rd September. You can listen to it on Radio National or download the podcast at http://www.abc.net.au/rn/futuretense/

Seb Chan speaks very eloquently about the social experience of the web - gathering meaning as information is communicated to others. Some of the issues he discusses:
when delivering usable and searchable collections on the web, can you cope with the demand of multiple niche audiences?
Does the museum mission reach out to these audiences?
Can museums deliver meaningful content to broader audiences.
Can museums change exhibition processes and ways of thinking and act on information which comes from online engagement with collections?

Finally, he suggests that small and medium size museums will struggle at information level and will be successful if they can engage their communities both online and onsite!
