Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Sorry, but this is a dumb question - getting an RSS feed from this site

Can someone help me explain this process to new members please? As I'm an administrator I see the page differently to other users.

It would be really useful for one of you more 'techy' types to explain to us how this is done ? I know that if you reply to a discussion or blog you automatically get updates, maybe that's all you need to do?

Any assistance gratefully received.

This BBC guide is a reasonable start: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/help/3223484.stm.

The main thing to remember is that first you need something (e.g. a desktop or browser application) that can subscribe to an RSS feed; then you need to actually subscribe to the feeds you want.

What is an RSS?

RSS stands for "really simple syndication", a format for distributing information from a blog or website which people can subscribe to with 'newsreader' software on the web or on their computer. Another similar format is called 'atom', but RSS is becoming a generic term for referring to all types of web syndication. Together with blogs, RSS feeds are rapidly replacing email newsgroups as prominent forms of digital communication.

Museum 3.0 offers many different RSS feeds to subscribe to. The main feeds are:

Latest Activity on Museum 3.0
http://museum30.ning.com/activity/log/list?fmt=rss

Discussion Forum - Museum 3.0
http://museum30.ning.com/forum?feed=yes&xn_auth=no

Latest Events - Museum 3.0
http://museum30.ning.com/events/event/feed?xn_auth=no

Everyone's Blog Posts - Museum 3.0
http://museum30.ning.com/profiles/blog/feed?xn_auth=no

In addition, each tag, theme and blog offer individual RSS feeds.

Users need to glue the address of the feed they wish to subscribe to in the 'subscribe' field of their newsreader software.

Popular newsreaders include
Google Reader: http://www.google.com/reader
SharpReader: http://www.sharpreader.net/
Bloglines: http://www.bloglines.com/

Wikipedia shows a long list of software which can read RSS feeds:

Micheal there is also a Common Craft video posted to this site that explains what RSS feeds are really simply.

Yes, you can still syndicate content from Museum3!

I am probably not the only person who's RSS feeds stopped working after Museum 3.0 became Museum3. I've now taken another look at the RSS possibilities on Museum3, since I'm in the process of moving over from "Google Reader" to "The Old Reader". The Museum3 site offers the same functions for showing content on other pages that the old Museum 3.0 site did, even if these possibilities aren't explicitly mentioned anywhere. You just have to update the addresses in the feed section of YOUR website, blog or RSS reader. Here are the new addresses:

Latest Activity on Museum3
http://museum3.org/activity/log/list?fmt=rss

Discussion Forum - Museum3
http://museum3.org/forum?feed=yes&xn_auth=no

Latest Events - Museum3
http://museum3.org/events/event/feed?xn_auth=no

Everyone's Blog Posts - Museum3
