First impressions of an impressive exhibit: “Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage. The First Peoples of Alaska”, Smithsonian Artic Studies Center in Anchorage Museum (AK, USA).

I have been here in the Living Our Cultures exhibit in Anchorage Museum for a while now, but still get overwhelmed by it. Even though the architecture is simple, with a rectangular gallery mainly houses seven big glass cases (with each one its big video monitor facing the entry) the dim lights, the music and the shifting images on the monitors almost sweeps me off my feet when entering the gallery. “When the birds came back…See More

Introducing project "MAKING DIGITIZED COLLECTIONS USEFUL"

I'm finally starting my little project "Making Digitized Collections Useful. What can we learn from current Smithsonian work with source communities" about the actual and potential usefulness of digitizing museum collections, with a special focus on source communities. The fieldwork will mostly be done on site in different Smithsonian branches in April-Sept 2011, but I hope to use  Museum 3.0 to exchange ideas with people anywhere. I’m currently at the Smithsonian Artic Studies Center (ASC)…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
An anthropologist with research and practical museum experience related to Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the Pacific. After working with the revision and digitisation of the ethnographic collection of the Museum of Cultural History (University of Oslo, Norway) I have developed a special interest in source communities and their possible use of digitised collections. I'm now trying to learn more about this topic and hope to someday get funding to realise a project in cooperation with the local museum on Rapa Nui. In 2011 I am a Museum Practice Fellow at the Smithsonian (Washington D.C. and Anchorage, Alaska) with the project "Making Digitised Collections Useful. What can we learn from current Smithsonian work with source communities?".

Hey Olaug,

I would love to know more about your research, and about your methodology/results as they develop. I am just in the (very) early days of my PhD looking at the effect of Web2.0 on online collections, and it would be great to stay in the loop with what you are doing.

Cheers!
