Profile Information

About Me:
I am an Associate Professor at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. I research the connections between digital content, cultural institutions and communication. I'm currently chief investigator of the Australian Research Council funded Engaging with Social Media project which explores the impact of social media on museum learning and communication. Between 2005 and 2008 I led the New Literacy New Audiences project (http://www.cci.edu.au/projects/new-literacy-new-audiences) which explored the creation of digital cultural content and its distribution across cultural networks. My PhD (2004, Media Museum: Sites of Virtual Display) explored the impact of new media on museum communication. You can find more information on this at http://nlablog.wordpress.com

2014 - how is your organisation preparing for this historic event?

2014 means many things to many people.

I'm currently seeking some discussion and thoughts around the role of cultural organisations in the representation of the beginning of World War 1. To put it into context, when 2014 comes around, it may well be the first commemoration where there are no living veterans.

  • What does this mean for the ways in which cultural organisations approach the commemoration?
  • What roles will museums, libraries, galleries and archives play…

Building a brighter future for museums

Nick Poole, Collections Trust UK

We have two jobs to do.

1- help people connect with each other

2- harness the power of the web to secure the survival of the museum

Today could be a milestone. The day when things changed.

Creating real lasting value, both cultural and financial. The place of technology is no longer at the margins.

Our role is to deliver. To do so, we must abandon some of our cherished… Continue

Strategic Content Management: thoughts from Collections Trust UK

Nick Poole and Laura Whitton from the Collections Trust UK about the future of collection management. Nick offered an overview of management as:

We're in the joy business- rich multimodal experiences

We're in the peace business - refusing them a cultural identity, fulfilling an important social function

We're in the respect business- multiple narratives, reflecting idenity and culture

We're in the fun business - surprise, what value, reward

We're in the tourism… Continue

Asserting it's relevance in the 21st centyry by doing the difficult work of asking the questions

What is the change model?

Who are the innovators?

What infrastructure, platform is required?

Many organizAtions are struggling with these and other deeply topical and challenging questions.

Hello Angelina,
Sorry for my late reply. Yes I enjoy this site. I love the concept of social networking and the way it helps connecting people who share similar interests. I aim to participate more in this site although English is not my first language. Looking forward to having your workshop in the future. I enjoyed listening to your speaking in MW2008! Best, Alison

Hi Angelina
Thanks for the welcome. We are doing a few things in the social media space at the moment. Most are really quite experimental at this stage, and we are busily learning a lot. I'm looking forward to using this space.

Hi Angelina,

Thank you for your welcome to the group. I will post more about how the MIA is using social media on my own comment page.

Thanks for your interest.

hi, Angelina

Thanks for the welcome. And, no, of course I'd not mind your doing a post on "My Life is my Museum", though please be aware that at the present time it is still no more than a fragmentary 'proof-of-concept' and intended as nothing else. You'll find it useful to read the 'About' page:

http://hutchison.homelinux.net/mlimm/index.php/My_Life_Is_My_Museum:About

before writing your post. My wife June has been applying the principles in a small way in the design of the 'London, Sugar & Slavery' exhibition at the Museum in Docklands, London, where she also organised a one-day conference looking at just such issues. Flattered, of course, at your interest :)

Hi Angelina

Thanks for sending me the invite to this site, and your phone message - we must coincide in real time soon!

I find it difficult to keep students engaged on our internal subject discussion forums, let alone suggesting another one to them! So much information, so little time...

Thank you Angelina. I look forward to participating in the discussion about social media and museums as this is becoming of great interest to me in my research.

Seth

Thank you, Angelina, for the warm welcome. The site has already been helpful. It's hard to keep track of all of the applications; it seems easier not to have to do it myself and actually get some use out of all this social networking stuff myself!
