Hey, Rachael... it's good to see this initiative. I'm looking forward to all the 'sharing and caring'.

Hi all,

Thanks for this opportunity to network with members of the EVRSIG. My challenge is that I am 'an old dog' and this method of communication is 'a new trick' for me to learn. I've also just joined another electronic chat group set up by a team at the Botanic Gardens Trust.

Q: How can I develop skills quickly and when do I find time to read and explore this site in a life that's already busy and full on? Any hints for gently easing a novice into this brave new world would be much appreciated.

P.S. It's taken me about 10 minutes to work out how to add this comment :(

Hi folks. Inspired by Lynda Kelly and the Melbourne symposium on social media in May, I'm working at ways to use social media for student etc contact. But so far, I'm finding that it's no more effective than the uni's online discussion list for each subject. ie, only a few people actively participate...
Now, I know there are more lurkers than participants, and they are evidently satisfied by lurking - and maybe they'll add something if they're ever sufficiently motivated.
That seems to be the crunch for social media: unless the participants are highly motivated (by personality or by need), they are as passive as ever, In other words, the medium of social networking isn't significantly more effective than other forms of communication. This EVRSIG group may prove more energetic because evaluators are curious, chatty people, but even Museum3 isn't overwhelmed by comment.
This takes one to the obvious point that communication media are demographic-specific. To be honest, I don't need my email inbox filled with notes that X or Y has just posted to Museum3 or Facebook or anything else...
Maybe it's best for event-specific communication where one is seeking a particular audience?

Yes, Linda, I find the same thing - the passives remain passive.

I agree that communication needs to have a point!

I wonder what EVRSIG people want to talk to each other about?

I'm usually very good at social networking sites. I'm finding ning a little difficult - so please bear with me.
Cheers

I'm so pleased to see 11 members already, with comments too. Gillian and I hatched this plan (to use museum 3.0 for EVRSIG) at the Museums Australia conference, and (for me at least) it was very much inspired by Lynda's work in social media. It's pretty new to me too, but it's a good reason to get involved and become familiar with the environment.
Thanks for your responses so far. Don't forget you can start your own discussion forum if there is any particular issue or question you want to raise.

Do you all know about our Forum on Visitor Research in Natural and Cultural Heritage Attractions, with John Falk and Lynn Dierking, on 13th July in Brisbane? You are all welcome - further details at http://tourism.uq.edu.au/index.html?page=110486
