Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

The National Library of NZ recently marked 1 year on Flickr and we've posted about what we've done & what we've learnt on our LibrarytechNZ blog.

I'd love to see other people's reflections on their use of social media - if you can share, could you pop a link in the comments?

Thanks for this post Courtney - look forward to see others' experiences. Meanwhile, here's an interesting idea from the London Transport Museum - a Flickr 'scavenger hunt' competition
Hi Courtney
Thank you for such an indepth insight into the use of Flickr at the library. I'm particularly interested in how you've been watching trends and collecting those statistics. Did you establish KPIs which included this so that you could report the success to management? If so, how did it go?
Thanks Angelina

We have a pro account on Flickr, so have access to decent stats. The biggest problem is they only last for a month! So every few days I note down the cumulative number of views on photos, photostream and sets. I also keep a monthly tally of how many times we've been favourited, commented, tagged, and invited to add a photo to a group. And I use technorati and Google Alerts to keep track of all the mentions of the project and use of the photos by bloggers.

In terms of passing this info on: formally, it all gets added to our monthly web report, which tracks the performance of all our sites, and is presented to our Senior Leadership Team. Informally, I pass on 'good news stories' to the people who I work with on the project (as motivation) and to the people in the Library who I see as stakeholders in the project (whose good will underpins the project).

However, we don't have firm KPIs. Like I said in the post, I still don't know how you measure success on Flickr, and we didn't set a goal of a certain number of views or instances of engagement to be achieved each month. I would consider the project to have failed though if:

- staff lost interest and stop contributing ideas and time
- Flickr users stop visiting and engaging with the images
- we run up against more copyright issues than we can easily handle, or people start misusing the images we post.

So far so good, none of these things have happened. To be honest, I think we're unlikely to set formal KPIs for the project.
Hi Courtney

That's a great little report.

I've linked it from my own report into our Commons experience 3 month report.

Thanks Seb!
