Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

HI Angelina. I know you and I are going to talk more about this in a few weeks but a bunch of us started to think about what we might do as part of this project at our Museum Users Group (MUGS) meeting the other day.

First, we thought we would set up a closed ning network for all public programs staff to join (especially part-time and casual staff that work as interpretive staff, in Kidspace and in the education area) so that we could test it out as a communication and sharing tool via news alerts, an events feature and sharing documents and images.

Second, we might use the Museum's Artlink project as a way to develop social media tools for teachers, students, Museum staff and practising artists to contribute to as a way to extend the physical program (I'm thinking a blog and Flickr project here).

Third, set up a Facebook page for a few new exhibitions we are developing (specifically Climate Change and the Science Communication projects like Science in the City/Bush/Suburbs) to communicate information and seek input and feedback from people. I've already started some audience reserach experiments (reported on the Audience Research and Web 2.0 group page) so see this as an extension of that.

To achieve this I'm thinking a series of workshops where we go through the tools, talk about how we might best use them for what purpose, sign people up and start experimenting. I'm also thinking that our monthly MUGS meetings could now be a forum for feedback and sharing. I could document these and upload our progress here.

Talk soon,

Hi Lynda
This is all really interesting stuff. I think the first and third options are most readily achieved. The second option overlaps with the research for Cooper Hewitt and while this could inform the development of teaching tools I suspect we need to look closely at how they come together. Let's chat in Canberra!
Angelina - we may also do some work with our Members and Facebook as part of the grant. Can you and I meet on 10th after we see Frank and Meredith? I'd like to at least get workshop dates locked in for maybe August when you get back from OS??
Further ideas - exploring the idea of collaborative content creation using a wiki-model is something Russ and I are talking about. We will still need to do workshops to explore the places on the web (a landscape analysis) and then looking at where is this tool going, what can this tool give us, where could it take us and how would it fit - perhaps a touring the web strategy?? Twitter is another good example of something we could use.
