Doctoral Studies related to Museums

Thanks to Mariana for starting this group!
I am very interested in speaking with existing and future students of museum-related studies. As an Associate Professor, I am able to supervise doctoral candidates and generally contribute our research findings to the broader research agendas. Please contact me (Angelina Russo) here or at arusso@swin.edu.au

I recently finished my doctorate, focused on the repatriation of human remains from museums to Haida Gwaii - but approached it from an ethnographic perspective, exploring local meanings of kinship and 'respect' on Haida Gwaii in order to understand repatriation. I think there is ample room to do further ethnographic research on repatriation, but an ethnography from within the museum. We're quick to label repatriation as a 'post-colonial' act, without really exploring its long term meanings and histories within communities or for museum professionals and museums as institutions.
I'm happy to share reading lists and bibliographies--just drop me a line!
Happy researching and writing,
:) Cara

Hello everyone,

I am currently a Doctoral Student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My research focuses generally on information in museums, libraries and archives - particularly on the exchange of cataloging and metadata about collections among different institutions. I am currently a Research Assistant for the Institute of Museum and Library Services Digital Collections and Content project (IMLS DCC - http://imlsdcc.grainger.uiuc.edu/history) which aggregates records from more than 250 U.S. institutions. More to come once I answer the "what are your research questions" question for myself!

Hi everyone,
My PhD dissertation focuses on exploring the strategies of using online communities to engage potential museum visitors. I use case studies as ways of collecting research data. The criteria that I employed to select my cases is based on one of the theories I adopt in my dissertation, which is Etienne Wenger's "Community of Practice". Therefore some CoP principles will be the theoretical framework that I will be using to exam and analyse my five cases along the year. This also means the case selection needs to fit in with the CoP’s logic. Not sure whether my understanding is correct or not but I thought Blog and Wiki are the online community types that can better fit in with the CoP logic. I have tried to select museum Blog & Wiki to go for my one year case studies. My cases ended up being in the London area since I also plan to do an onsite study with some interviews with the web masters and it would be easier to have all my cases in a same geographic area. From this April I have started the “participant observation” in my five cases in their Blog/Wiki, which I will continue for at least half a year (till October) before I travel to the physical field (London) for a bit and then come back to the virtual field to finish my study. If any of you have any suggestion, I would very much appreciate. Thank you!

Dear all,

I'm also a Ph.D Student (Rotterdam, Netherlands) and my dissertation will be on 'exhibiting community cultures inside and outside the museum'. I will look at all kinds of presentation and communication techniques and try to categorize them. Besides that I'm asking the question what new kinds of presentation and communication techniques will mean for both the physical and institutional context of the museum and the representation of the communities in which community museums are embedded. I just started, so I am still reading a lot and trying to structure my thoughts. I am looking forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with you!

dear all
Last year i have begin a research about museum and facebook for my master thesis in France, i wanted then to conduct a phd about web 2.0 and museum and the way it change relation toward the community, i thought that it will be relevant to have research done on the use of social network and the rise of new network like twitter and ning community. Unfortunately my subject seem to be to much ahead for a french university like pantheon sorbonne and i have been said that my subject wasn't a subject of art history and museum related studies.
i'm deeply convinced that the use of social network by museum all over the planet must be analysed to lead to a better understanding of the museum of the futur and the change it make inside museum walls.
i'm posting this comment here to know if some people would be interested in this research or would give some advice to allow me to carry on my research

Hi Meriam. There's more info about how to enquire about doing a PhD here: http://www.le.ac.uk/ms/study/doctorate.html You could also contact Dr Viv Golding, who is the programme director for PhD studies, and/or Dr Ross Parry, who leads the Digital Heritage research group. There contact emails are here: http://www.le.ac.uk/ms/contactus/stafflist.html

Hope this helps!
