Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

As a Master's student in Museum Studies here at San Francisco State University, I'm in process of writing a term paper for a management course. Inspired by all the good online work that is being done here at my Magnes Museum internship in Berkeley, I want to write a "best practices" guide for a development director and all they need to (and should!) know about online networking and technology in order to increase audience participation. Aside from all of the friendly blog banter, is there a journal or scholastic sources any one knows of to use as references? I'm limited to using only a few online sources, and while every one is very knowledgeable, I believe I would receive lower marks if I were to reference anything sounding like "museumlovers.com" in my bibliography, so please, any suggestions are helpful!

Hi Michaela
www.archimuse.com has past papers from the Museums and the Web conference. It is an excellent source. You will find a paper which Darren Peacock and I wrote for this year's conference. The url for the published paper is http://www.archimuse.com/mw2009/abstracts/prg_335002060.html.
Cheers
Hi Michaela- First Monday is an excellent online scholarly and peer-reviewed journal on all things Internet. It often has very good articles on social networking and relates well to museums. It might not be exactly what you're looking for from an audience development perspective, but I would recommend checking it out. The url is http://firstmonday.org

Best wishes in your studies!
Have you looked at the Chronicle of Philanthropy?
Hi Michaela

You might want to look at some of the papers by Adrian Sargeant, who is a Professor at Indiana University. He spoke in Sydney around a year ago at a Development masterclass and was researching around fundraising online. Here's his info http://www.spea.iupui.edu/faculty/adriansargeant/

best wishes
Hi Michaela, I hope this doesn't seem like shameless self promotion but i wrote an article last year while I was doing my Masters. Also, archimuse is a great source for different things. There is also an article online by Paul Arthur which is very useful.

Arthur, Paul. 'Exhibiting history: the digital future', Recollections. Available [online]: [18 March 2008].

Thanks Megan! Your article is right up my alley. Where did you do your Masters and how did you like your experience at school? Were you able to get an awesome job when you were done?
Hi Michaela, I did my MA at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Apart from the inability to present my work in any form but a written thesis, the experience was good. I already had a job with a heritage-based production company before I did my MA, and am now there full-time. In fact, they sponsored by MA! I would love to be getting into more web-based work, but as a small business we don't have the capacity to experiment with these things in the same way as museums - which is why i stay in touch with the museum community! There is a small chance that a touring exhibition I am working on at the moment will get funding for a participatory web-based aspect to accompany the tour... but it is, of course, dependent on grant funding. Fingers crossed!
Anyway, I am glad you liked the article!
two interesting presentations I have seen on-line are:

and

I hear they're doing some very interesting work at MAGNES. It must be a wonderful place to be doing an internship... :) O.K. -- definitely "shameless self-promotion" but SOOOO thrilled to see you are "diggin' in" here, Michaela! And glad you provoked some strong responses.

Are museum people the best people, or what?
