what will the museum of the future be like?

Non-U.S. examples of museum uses of social media towards diversity, equality, social justice

Hello. I'm drafting a book chapter about the uses of social media by museums towards aims of diversity, equality, and social justice. It's intended to be an expansive, although not comprehensive, overview of this subject. While writing my outline, I'm suddenly aware of how U.S.-centric my examples are and I'm hoping people here might be able to point me towards a more diverse body of examples.

I'm looking for examples of social media usage by museums towards diversity, equality, and social justice, as well as examples of social media usage by museums with missions about social justice.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hi Amelia
I'll give some thought to this. From memory there was a Manchester Art Gallery project that was able to demonstrate changes in attitude to diversity. I just can't remember what it was called! I hope some of the network will be able to help here! good luck with it!
Thank you very much, Angelina!
Are you referring to the project that was part of the 'Buried in the Footnotes' research done by the Research centre at Leicester? can't remember the name of the exhibition but Richard Sandell was one of the coordinators.

I'd also suggest having a look at 'Looking Reality in the Eye' by Janes and Conaty. This looks at some social responsibility work in museums throughout the world.
Thanks for the suggestion, Bronwyn. Will do.
Hi Amelia
You may also be interested in robert janes's book, Museums in a troubled World. He provides some interesting examples and context. Cheers
I definitely will look into the book. Thank you so much for the resource!
Kia ora Amelia,
Over the past few years I have been working with young people from refugee backgrounds to target, develop and maintain relationship with these communities in New Zealand. This project entitled the Mixing Room culminated in an exhibition here at Te Papa, The Museum of New Zealand. Check out our blog site. http://sites.tepapa.govt.nz/refugeesblog/. There might be something of use for you here. Let me know how you get on.
Hi Sarah,

Thank you for sharing this! At first glance, I think it will be a perfect example for my chapter.
The Immigration Museum in Melbourne is currnetly running an online media project with support from Vic Health called Talking Difference, designed to promote diversity and facilitate dialogue about culutural difference. you can check out the project including blog and various user-generated content at: http://museumvictoria.com.au/discoverycentre/websites-mini/talking-...
