Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Museum Victoria - Collections Online launched - we would appreciate comments - good and bad!

Museum Victoria has launched its collections online system after an eighteen month project. It is the best example of the new level of internal cooperation engendered by MV's approach to "online" development as a shared and core activity.

I know that all of you from collecting institutions with large legacy collections are familiar with the many complex issues encountered in developing these systems - the Online Team at MV has developed this entirely in-house and I think its great! We would like to start a discussion around how everyone is going with their approaches to encougaging access to collections online. It is a rapidly evolving field of action for all of us - hope you find what we have developed of interest.

Congratulations - looks great - and obviously reflects a mile of thinking and woirk.
One big point for me is the question of sharing and personlisation - i.e. why can't I send an item out onto a Fecebook group - Twitter it - or even better take it into a private online folder where I can use it for my own learning/research, as well as share it with others who I want to collaborate with.
I take it you must have discussed all these options - and I curious as to your current thinking on this?

That said - again - I am very impressed with some of the features - e.g. timeline - mapping - and the way you associate an object with themes.

However, as others on this platform know I think personlisation tools are at the heart of the user experience with an online collection - and would love institutions of your standing to be taking leadership around this?

Hello Paul,

Thankyou for responding - you raise good points and yes we have been discussing user experience and personalisation - we are still working on our overall copyright / sharing position and really until we resolve where we are with that any large scale mashup approach is out of the question! It will come in 3-6 months when we will be ready and able to open the MV collections significantly more than they are in this initial release. It is though a big step for us - until now there was essentially no access to the history collections other than natural history where we have over one million records available albeit in a pretty user unfriendly form.

Tim
Hi Tim
I understand the need to work through copyright, especially in regard to mash-ups - API's etc.
However, I'm a little at a loss to see how this would affect a decision to make a My Folder option on your current site, so that the user can collect and share with other users of the site the objects and site pages they select to go into their own personal or group folder.
As you know, this feature, if not exactly a commonplace, has been used on other cultural sites as a - light box - or whatever.
My extension to this is to also offer people an ability to make a profile page - say what their interests are and then make a group of similar users.

There is no need to extend copyright - people are using the material within the site.

On a wider note - I'm still very interested in what the next step for the NMOLP in the UK , especailly the Creative Spaces part of this project. These links below are also a great example of personalisation - again - the copyright issue doesn't not seem to have been a major showstopper.

I would be interested to hear from others in the Uk how are still across this project. In the meantime I would be interested in hearing if you would consider a " My LightBox" My Folder option as the next step for your project?

It would also be interesting to find out if therte was any energy for a NMOLP - Creative Spaces - project in Australasia?
