Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Good day,

I work for the Nova Scotia Museum - the most decentralized museum in
Canada - 27 museums across the province,
including over 200 historic buildings, living history sites, vessels,
specialized museums and close to a million artifacts and specimens.

We released an Interpretative
Master Plan
last year and are currently designing a collaborative,
cross-site, two day training retreat for Front Line/Interpretation
Staff.

Any thought or suggestions for about the concept of a two day retreat or
training activities?

Thanks,
Victoria

Victoria, I will not have a chance to read the full interpretive document right now. However, before any staff are brought together, I can imagine that they may have thoughts, etc., to share about the final, published document, its contents, concepts and techniques, etc., even if they were involved, one way or another, in its conception, formulation, etc. Perhaps this has been done already?
Also, the diverse audiences expected by the many centers that make up the Nova Scotia Museum might also, now, have some useful/interesting responses to the printed document, and its 'anticipations' for them - notions that would be helpful to have on hand for any form of retreat or training.
No doubt these 'steps' have been identified by the Museum. However, all too often, the thoughts of visitors, or the larger community of potential participants, and those staff and volunteers who will 'host' them, or design the anticipated on-site or online experiences for their visitors, are not as fully 'considered' as they might be when it comes to presenting collections, special exhibits or programs at each center.
Thanks for your feed back.

Staff were involved in the creation of the document. The purpose of the boot camp not only for professional development but also for Interpretative staff to meet, collaborate and learn from each other.

We really want to help staff address diverse audiences and their different expectations. Staff need the skills to both assess the motivations of visitors and to adapt their role accordingly.

This is being consider and we welcome suggestions.
