Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Changes to ning - a possible way forward - please give us your feedback!

As Robin Boast reminded us, from July, Ning will no longer be offereing a free service. They have now released their new pricing structure and while not onerous, it coincides with a change in the way in which Lynda and I administer Museum 3.0.

Until now, this brilliant network has grown organically and we have been able to devote substantial time to it as it formed part of our experimentations throughout the research project we have been collaborating on. From the end of 2010, neither of us will have the same time available to us to continue maintaining the network at the level  which has made it so effective.

Therefore, we're looking to evolve the network to do a number of new things:
redesign the site to make navigation easier
develop podcasts for ITunes which explore the issues we discuss here on the network
develop new webinar series in lieu of the in-situ conference series 'Transformations in Cultural and Scientific Communication'.

In order to do this, we may need to move to a tiered fee structure so that we can employ some people to develop the site and add new and specific features.

We're thinking of something that looks like this

free membership
contribute to blog and forum posts
upload photos

basic - $45 per annum
contribute to blog and forum posts
upload photos, videos, audio
establish and contribute to chat, events, groups
install ning apps

premium - $85 per annum
contribute to blog and forum posts
establish and contribute to chat, events, groups
install ning apps
closed works groups, moderated membership
special membership events
discounts to webinars, seminars etc.

We have till the beginning of July to make a decision. We really need your input on this one! Please do let us know what do you think?

Wow - these contributions are a great reflection of the community Angelina and Lynda have built.

I am - as a reasonably remunerated public servant who can probably claim it on tax - feel happy about parting with 45 bucks a year.
However I feel like the pricing structure penalises the contributors and rewards the lurkers. Doesn't seem quite right - I'd prefer a more flat prcinging structure (leaving "events" like webinars out of it for a sec) and reflecting the person's capacity to pay - student/ professional/org.
Why not fold the whole project into MANexus? Is there really any fundamental difference between the content and membership here and MANexus. I know that Museum 3.0 has people involved who are not members of Museums Australia but that is hardly an insurmountable problem is it?
Hard to say - I really value the international membership of this Ning - I'd be sorry to discourage those members by seeming to be an Australia specific network.
I agree Kate. Two thirds of our membership is international. We also have a broader objective given that we aren't the national peak body for the sector. Regardless, we're looking at how we partner with both MA and CAN in the future of Museum3. More to come!
Thanks to everyone for your feedback. I generalised it and added my musings to the vexed question and lo and behold, the article has been published on Anthill. http://anthillonline.com/we-built-a-free-online-community-how-do-we...
I'd be really interested in your thoughts.
Just to confirm, these are musings. Lynda and I meet in the next fortnight to confirm next steps!
Love your feedback!

Great news!! The Graphic Designer started yesterday! We're looking at having the new graphic identity ready by the end of the month! In the meantime, we're almost ready to move to the next iteration of Museum3. More to come soon!
Angela, your efforts, and everyone who contributed to the matter, are really appreciated. The scheme presented does seems comprehensive, and I hope it will generate enough income to keep the system operating. I'm not exactly sure what it may mean that the premium category can 'moderate membership', or that it can 'install ning apps'. Perhaps these are administrative 'categories' that should be separate? In any event, many thanks.
