Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Can you recommend Museums in Europe with interesting information technology?

Hello there, I am involved in making new technology for museums in Japan. Currently I am looking for museums to visit in Europe who carry out the interesting trials in information technology and semantic web. I have Tate Modern hand-held in my mind, but I am sure there is much more to see! The person actually visiting is a professor of National Information Institution of Japan who's speciality is in semantic web. He could visit any country in Europe.
It would help us carry out our future experiments here in Japan. Thank you!

Dear Machi,

I know of a few examples of museums in Holland that are participating in a pilot project called CATCH (plus): Continuous Access to Cultural Heritage. There all kinds of explorations with Cultural Heritage and the Semantic Web are made. But I am afraid you will not find this presented in the museums themselves yet. If you want to find out more, here is the website:

And here is the brochure (pdf): http://www.nwo.nl/files.nsf/pages/NWOA_79BCX8/$file/CATCH%20Factsheet_lowres.pdf

However, there is a very good museum on (information) technology in Austria: Ars Electronica. Their website is also available in Japanese: http://www.aec.at/index_de.php

I hope this was useful for you! Kind regards, Monika
Dear Monika,

Thank you so much for kindly introducing the information about CATCH.
It is very interesting and I will definitely study this in detail.
In our lab, we invite interns from the industrial department of TU/e, NL, every year.
I have also lived in Eindhoven for 6 months, and am especially excited to find out about CATCH.
Is there a contact person in TU/e to find out more about their contribution to the project?

For 2009 ars electronica festival, the human size android from our lab attended...
....wonder if anybody has seen it.

Thank you very much again. It was very useful for me.
Kind regards,
Machi
The British Museum will be experimenting with the semantic web; the Science Museum (London) is experimenting with linked data and RDFa.

You could also search the archives of the international Museums and the Web conference for past papers (http://www.archimuse.com/conferences/mw.html)
You should talk to web people at the V&A, London.
They have a new collections search interface. Has some neat features.
Also, talk to Nick Poole at the Collection Trust about Culture Grid.
Finally, Jan Finnis and her team at Culture 24 should also be on your radar.

I am interested in what you mean by " the semantic web' - would be great if you could be more specific about the kinds of things you are interested in ?
