what will the museum of the future be like?

Announcing the Australian Musuem's new website

On Sunday 7 June 2009, the Australian Museum launched its new website. After four long years of planning and preparation we finally have a site that enables staff to manage their own online material and which enables us to engage in two-way interaction and community building.
For the past two years we have been actively working on organisational change, using the staff mantra of working 20% differently, not 20% more. We have also been using the Engaging with Social Media in Museums research project to conduct online experiments which resulted in an added benefit of inspiring staff into wanting to engage further in the online world and become proactive – we have been blogging about that project here on Museum 3.0.

I invite you to visit our site, sign up to our community and please give us feedback either via the commenting function or the email form.

For further background on our site and Web 2.0 I have writen a post on the Westmuse blog here.

Congratulations to everyone at the Australian Museum for the launch of the new website! Thanks also for the plug for the Engaging with Social Media project! The site looks great, is easy to navigate and really communicates the contemporary nature of the museum's communication program! I look forward to watching it evolve! Congrats to you especially Lynda for all of the work you've done in proactively encouraging participation!
Thnx. I didn't do much - it was Brooke, Russ, Ondine, HelenS, HelenW, Jenn, David, Jon, Aaron, Peter, Anne, Janet, Renae, Lisa plus heaps & heaps of Museum staff. I too am looking forward to the evolution of our site - we do have many exciting enhancements planned over the next 6 months.
Great news Lynda, well done to all involved. It looks fantastic!
Jonathan Cooper, Art Gallery of NSW, has reviewed our site on his blog.
I really like the depth of authored content on the site. Lots of detailed articles that are a useful resource, particularly for education. I couldn't find anywhere to search the collection of the Australian Museum. Was this a deliberate choice or have I missed it?
Thnx Paul. We will be adding the collectiion finder over the next coupla months.
Sounds good.
Great posts in the Audience Research Blog.
We also had a blog post about our new site on the Emergence blog - dont' know who these people are. Just picked it up on Google Alerts.
Hello, I am new to Museum3.0, and I post this to let you know thatI have written a blog entry about the Australian Museum new website. Because I was really impressed with the system that enables users to tag, comment, and submit things, I had to let my colleauges in Japan know what it's like.
Museum Media & ICT blog

In 2006, at the National Museum of Ethnology in Japan, I was able to convince the museum director to use the "museum official tags" to let the users look at the objects freely, using PSP as the browser. They used our system, called the Museum Media, for their special exhibitions over a year. Since then, I have been suggesting some museums to use the "users' tags" to let visitors go to different museums with their tags or other people's tags in accordance with their interests. Unfortunatelly, this has not happened yet. Knowing that you have actually done it on your official web encourages me. Thank you.
Thanks Machi for your post and getting the word out to Museum 3.0 members about the great work being done in Japan. Look forward to hearing more and welcome to our network.
Richard Hayward asked Which technology did you use in your website? We are currently implementing Drupal for our CMS.

Richard - we considered a range of systems but decided to go with a bespoke system. The wireframes for the site were developed over a long period, with a custom-built system was the best way to meet our needs.

Here's a screen shot of what the CMS looks like and the staff agree it is really easy to use.

Thanks Lynda, looks great! How many asset types, and workflow states do you have now, and do you need them all / are you using them all? How many different types or roles of admin users does your cms support?
