Museum 3

what will the museum of the future be like?

Have peole had any involvement/ knolwedge/opinion on the ABC Sydney Sidetracks project?
I think it is a really interesting project. I just used it as part of a blog post on the death of the sydney opera house architect.

Sidetracks has some very useful film and audio resources on the Opera House.

On the video sode, as I explore in the blog post I'm curious as to why, if they are offering a quicktime download, they dont offer an embed option to the video, as I am strongly off the view that this is the best way to get the benefit, and retain some kind of marketing control on the footage going viral anyway.

That aside I think its a great project and was wondering if anyone in the group had knowledge /involvement./ or an opinion on it?

Nearly forgot - the blog post is at

Is that the project that used to be called 'Jaywalking Sydney'? A very interesting project which is the work of PhD student Sarah Barnes in collaboration with a number of institutions. I think Sarah is possibly a member of this network.

I think it is a great experiment and am interested to see how it ends up. Particularly, I am interested in knowing whether the general public pick up on it.
Hi Paul

I did an interview with Sarah Barnes about the project on F&N.

http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/dmsblog/index.php/2008/11/11/abc-in...

Basically it is in an early stage - there are more features coming and it is also about testing the waters both externally (do people use this sort of thing? is mobile heritage of enough interest in Australia?) and internally (how does the ABC Archives and commercial sales unit deal with archival footage? what about rights clearances? clearing rights for mobile as well as web? what challenges are there for participating institutions like Powerhouse?)

Hi Seb
Thanks for this - very interesting - great interview - I love her quote /reference to Alex Morgan - the intersect between his unseen world and the physical landscape seems really apt given the interplay between the Opera House architect and the ABC project.

Feels like there is a whole lot of resonance with this notion and the museums sectors new sense of digital play between the object and the audience?

I have updated the blog post to accommodate your input which, by the by was most welcome!!

Hi Paul, many thanks for your interest in the project, just catching up on this thread now. Megan and Seb have done a good job of explaining some of the background research questions (thanks guys!). I produced the content for the site (initiated by my PhD) but not the interface design. Embedding would certainly be nice..

There's a bit more info on the background to the project and production issues on my blog at http://sitesandsounds.net.au. Feel free to get in touch if you're keen to know more. Thanks again - and glad you managed to pick up on the Opera House material. Regards, Sarah Barns
